Hello everyone. I Just wanted to share one of our current puppies with you all. This sweet girl is Lilly, or sometimes we call her Lilly of the Valley.
She was born with a hairlip which was a first for us here at Pure Elegance Shih Tzu. She was such a beautiful girl though that I just had to try to save her so I made a quick trip to my favorite vet to get his opinion. He said her hairlip was fixable but I would need to bottle feed her until she was on solid food and strong enough for surgery.
I tried a store bought puppy formula and syringe feeding. I could get a few cc's down her but she resisted me the whole way and wasn't gaining any weight. I ordered puppy feeders from Lifetime and kept feeding her with a syringe until they arrived. The Lifetime feeders are a syringe with a nipple on the end so the puppy can suck but you can still control how much she is getting. The first time I tried feeding her with them I was so excited when she took more than twice the amount that she was taking with a syringe. A good friend also sent me a recipe for a goat milk puppy formula and I was able to find a source of fresh goat milk locally. Within a few days Lilly was able to latch on to her nurser and started eating with very little help and immediately started to put weight on. She stays with her Mama all the time and is able to live a normal puppy life with her 4 brothers and I feed her formula every three hours and she is thriving! I am so excited with how well she is doing. She has almost doubled her weight in the last couple of weeks and is almost 8 ounces now and will be 3 weeks old tomorrow.
She will have some plastic surgery once she is totally on solid food although I think she could probably live a normal life without it. It does prevent her from being able to nurse but shouldn't really affect her otherwise. I think she is totally adorable even with it and she sure doesn't lack for lots of attention.
She has a family waiting for her when she is old enough to go if I can bring myself to place her. I have gotten super attached to this sweet baby and once she is old enough to think of me as more that just a source of food I am sure I will get even more attached to her.
Well here are a few more pictures of her sweetness and thanks for taking the time to read about this darling baby girl.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
